Feeding SW Virginia M1 Week of Giving 2023

ROANOKE, VA (December 2023) – Expanding upon GivingTuesday, a global generosity movement, Member One Federal Credit Union donated a combined total of $38,000 to five non-profit organizations during what the Credit Union called its “Week of Giving.”

  • Lynchburg Area Veterans Council, Inc. ($7,000) – The Council provides services from a consortium of local chapters of military groups that connect veterans to needs-based resources including education, healthcare, financial assistance, housing, transportation, and social support.

“We are very appreciative of the donation from Member One,” said COL (R) Thomas W. Current, President of the Lynchburg Area Veterans Council. “The Lynchburg Area Veterans Council helps veterans in our area with every imaginable need, especially trying to assist veterans experiencing homelessness. Every penny of the donation will stay in this area to help our most needy veterans.”

  • Feeding Southwest Virginia ($10,000) – This large local food bank is an affiliate member of Feeding America and for the last four decades, their ultimate mission has remained the same: eliminate hunger in our region. Over $33 million worth of food and grocery related products are channeled through a network of 380 partner feeding programs in our 26-county, 9-city region that provide food or meals to those in need.

“We are thankful for the generous donation from Member One Federal Credit Union on Giving Tuesday,” stated Pam Irvine, President and CEO of Feeding Southwest Virginia. “This is a season of giving and the season of high need. This donation will bring support in alleviating hunger for Southwest Virginia, and will also have twice the impact thanks to our Board of Directors match campaign! This tremendous gift will help to provide 60,000 meals to hungry families in SW Virginia.”

  • The Least of These Ministry ($7,000) – TLOT provides gap-based support for the unsheltered in our area, including basic housing, warmth, clothing, showers, and laundry services in the Roanoke Valley. TLOT has helped permanently house nearly 400 people over the last 4 years.

“Member One Federal Credit Union's generous gift ensures that we can continue waging war on homelessness in the Roanoke Valley,” stated Dawn Sandoval, Executive Director of The Least of These Ministry.

  • Carilion Clinic Foundation, Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals ($7,000) – Carilion Children’s is the only dedicated hospital for children and adolescents in Southwest Virginia, located in Roanoke, Virginia. Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals provide comfort, treatment, and hope to millions of sick kids. Children’s Miracle Network is a nation-wide network of hospitals (with local connections) that provides cost-free healthcare and patient services, as well as education and equipment for those in need.

“As a member of Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, Carilion Children’s is fully committed to giving every child a healthy future,” said Macy Ware, Program Director, Carilion Clinic Foundation. “We are so thankful to Member One for choosing CMN as a recipient for their week of giving. With this gift, we will be able to help provide medical care, equipment, and therapy programs that save and improve the lives of children here in Southwest Virginia.”

  • Girl Scouts of Virginia Skyline Council ($7,000) – A local chapter of the national Girl Scouts organization, providing girls (K-12) with empowering social opportunities, including business and financial education (Cookie College), as well as offsetting membership fees through financial aid for participation.

“We are so thrilled and grateful for the support of Member One and their commitment to give back to the local community, stated Nikki Williams, Chief Executive Officer of Girl Scouts of VA Skyline Council. “This donation will be used to provide access to programming for girls who want to participate in Girl Scouts and allow us to continue building girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place.”

Our Week of Giving, anchored by GivingTuesday, is a great opportunity for us to support our community where we’re needed,” stated Alex Lucas, VP of Community Impact. Our employees, our members, and, in this case, our plusONE Visa® cardholders have a giving heart. It’s a great week to acknowledge and facilitate that giving, and to remember that we, all together, are the Credit Union and giving back is in our DNA.”

A portion of the Week of Giving funds were made on behalf of Member One’s plusONE credit card, a card that provides cash back to members and the community. With a mission to help our members, employees, and communities flourish, Member One Federal Credit Union is honored to be able to assist these five worthy community organizations in continuing their important work.
